Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo didn't have the day he was hoping for in the opening free practice sessions ahead of this weekend's San Marino grand Prix, the former champion finished the first day of practice down in eighth place overall with a best time of 1'33.614.

Lorenzo blames a lot of his finishing position, five places behind his championship leading teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, on the track conditions.

After heavy overnight rain, the opening 45 minute free practice session began with a damp track. The green conditions made the Misano circuit a lot different to the one the team tested on recently and Lorenzo is hoping it improves for Saturday afternoon's qualifying.

“It was rather a difficult day today because after the rain that fell last night, the track conditions changed a lot and there is a lot less grip than in the test three weeks ago. I hope the track will improve tomorrow, but in any case we have to work hard to adapt the bike to the new conditions.”

It was a good practice for the Ducati team's wild card entry, Michele Pirro, who finished in seventh with a time of 1'33.591.
