The first free practice session at the Pukekohe Raceway in New Zealand was topped by the Erebus of David Reynolds this morning as the Supercars got out onto a damp circuit to kick off the penultimate round of the 2016 championship season.
“That’s a pretty good time for, like, your first flying lap of the weekend,” Reynolds was quoted as saying on the sport’s official website. “The car has got heaps of grip, the track was obviously in good condition. We’ve still got some areas to improve, but I’m really happy. I love this track, I like any track you’ve got to bring your kahunas to go fast.”
Red Bull Racing’s Shane Van Gisbergen was second quickest on home soil, but he was three tenths shy of Reynold’s pace with last year’s winner, Jamie Whincup in third.
Fabian Coulthard was a pleasing fourth with mark Winterbottom fifth and Rick Kelly sixth. Craig Lowndes almost collided with Van Gisbergen after an off over the kerbs, but thankfully they avoided contacted as Lowndes string of bad luck at this track left him down in 14th place.
