Ross Barkley is set to be given a long-term deal by new Everton manager Ronald Koeman as the Toffees begin to move on to the next phase of Koeman's plans.

After the Dutchman moved to Merseyside at the end of June following the departure of Roberto Martinez, Koeman's initial plans were to bring in a host of new players.

Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie headlined six names that all made the move under Koeman's watch, and the 53-year-old has now turned his attentions to re-signing players, starting with Barkley.

The midfielder has been a key member of Everton's first team over the past two seasons, and despite having two years left on his current deal, the Toffees would love to lock the 22-year-old up for years to come.

Along with Barkley, Romelu Lukaku is also a player Everton badly want to keep, as the club has also begun trying to negotiate with the Belgian.

Lukaku was the subject of serious interest from Chelsea but failed to move to London in the summer transfer window.

THe 23-year-old attacker seems to be open to a re-negotiated contract, although Lukaku wants to be given the freedom to leave the club in the future should he feel the desire to.

"I want to win prizes," said Lukaku. "But when I get into a situation where I can leave but my team will not let me, I'm not one to go absent, get fined and cultivate a negative reputation.

"I try to remain calm and treat my club with respect. Hopefully they can treat me also with respect and I can leave through the main gate. I will not quarrel with Everton."
