Australians Sam Stosur and Ash Barty have both suffered second round defeats at the China Open in Beijing.

Barty was soundly beaten by a slick Elina Svitolina, 6-4, 6-2, ending her bid to become the No.1 ranked Australian female player by the end of the week.

Stosur meanwhile, was beaten in straight sets by French Open winner, Jelena Ostapenko, who also defeated Stosur at Roland Garros.

Ostapenko beat the Queenslander in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

"It was a tough match today - Sam was playing pretty well, and it was hard to win the second set, but in general I'm happy with the way I played today and happy to be in the third round," Ostapenko said following the match, after Stosur managed to fight back from 5-2 down in the first and also came back from several breaks down in the second.

Meanwhile, fellow Aussie, Daria Gavrilova, will face China's Peng Shuai, in the next round.
