Melbourne Victory has confirmed it will appeal Besart Berisha's two game ban following his red card on Saturday against the Wellington Phoenix.

"Melbourne Victory can confirm it has referred the sanction proposed to Besart Berisha by the independent Match Review Panel (MRP) on Monday to the independent Disciplinary Committee for hearing and determination of the sole question of sanction," the club said in a statement its website.

"Berisha was sanctioned by the MRP following an incident in that arose in or around the 36th minute of Saturday's Hyundai A-League match against Wellington Phoenix."

"The MRP determined that Berisha committed the offence of assault on a player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball) against Andrew Durante and proposed a sanction of two matches (comprising the mandatory one-match suspension plus one additional match, being the minimum sanction for the offence)."

Berisha was shown a straight red card after he appeared to kick Durante as the Phoenix player stood over him after he fouled the Albanian.

If Berisha is unsuccessful and his ban is upheld, he will miss the final game of the season and the first week of finals.

The date of the hearing is yet to be confrmed.
