World No.1 Novak Djokovic has survived a scare against Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in the opening round of the US Open.

A clearly rusty Djokovic, won a scratchy first set, before losing the second. However, he rallied, to win the final two sets, and record a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal cruised through his opening round match, defeating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1 6-4 6-2.

Australian youngster Jordan Thompson blew a two set to love lead against Belgian Steve Darcis, losing 5-7 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 7-5.

Meanwhile, fellow Aussie James Duckworth recorded the biggest win of his career, defeating experienced Dutchman Robin Haase in five sets.

The Australian wildcard won the match 4-6 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-3.

The 24-year-old will now face ninth seed Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the second round.
